My Story

One of the reasons I wrote an e-book was to share my story with more people. So I don’t have much of the ‘X-factor’ back-story. Yeah I was bullied at school, yeah I was attacked by gangs, but I coped with it, grew and learnt to be better in myself. Pre-pandemic, I attended a University reunion where someone thought I was more balanced and better adjusted than most of the year group. I think that is partly due to an internal strength as well as guidance I received from family, most who looked after me on my Silat travels. Travel broadens the mind, experiencing the culture of different countries will help you become a more well-rounded person. I have been fortunate enough to explore the other side of the world, so if you haven’t, I can bring it to you! The problem is you have to trust the source. I have had conversations with different teachers that have made places look dark and foreboding, scaring you into not going. I was told that training Silat in Holland is hidden and that if you go to a school and say the wrong thing, you could get killed. I was told the same for Indonesia. People will tell you “this is how it’s done back home” and “we train for jungle warfare”. A lot of this is to ensure you don’t venture out and experience the reality for yourself. The credibility of the source is important. Just because someone calls himself a Maha Guru, Guru Besar or any other vaunted title doesn’t make it so. I received my title and grades from the last of the big 4 Maha Guru (Tan Sri Hj. Omar Din) in Malaysia. There is no-one who would question his position and status in Silat (except one American I talked to on Silat TV!). He was feted by people around the world and received many awards. His Silat history is known, and the same goes for my Pukulan accreditation. I was given permissions in Pukulan that others who use the title were not. My teacher (Pa Flohr) is highly recognised around the world for his skills and knowledge in developing Pukulan. For many years I taught as I was taught in Malaysia, though for the European audience. I soon learnt that it wasn’t very successful, therefore I decided to change and adapt it. I am changing again to enable more people to learn Silat, without the nonsense, mysticism, and the ego that has been one of the key issues holding it back. I have been working on an Instructor Training Course for some time now, designed to help you learn and then teach Silat in your school. If you’re interested in becoming a genuine Silat instructor and would like further information then please do get in touch.
